Our Learning

Week beginning 3rd March 2025

This week our focus in the nursery has been the concept of COLOUR. The children have started with naming colours as well as talking about mixing colours and developing the complexity of language to talk about shades of colour as well.

The concept language for feelings that we have focused on in the nursery this week is:

Some of the stories we have been reading in the nursery this week include:

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, what do you see?, Mixed,

The Day the Crayons Quit, Kippers Birthday and

The Blue Balloon.

Some of the provision and activities that we have been using this week linked to this concept have included: matching colourful cars to different coloured and numbered parking bays, coloured and scented play dough, sorting coloured objects to matching containers in water with links to floating and sinking, colour mixing using primary colours and working together to create a colour table with a different focus colour each day.

Our maths focus has included positional language, such as ‘on’, ‘under’, ‘over’, ‘through’ and ‘between’, to describe the position of objects, their own bodies or when describing simple route. The children have been supported to create simple routes around small-world scenes that link to familiar stories or children’s interests, using shape resources, such as pattern blocks and number shapes. The children have freely explored these resources through open-ended activities at first and then as children become more familiar with these, they can begin to use them for a particular purpose.

Our phonics focus has included listening and syllables, rhyming and alliteration and sound knowledge along with focus activities to encourage oral segmenting and blending and tuning into initial sounds. Our focus nursery rhyme this week has been Baa,Baa Black Sheep.

If you would like to support your child to develop their vocabulary linked to learning about colours is by integrating fun and interactive activities into daily routines. Encourage colour recognition by naming colours during playtime, mealtime, and while exploring outdoors (e.g., "Look at that red car!"). Provide opportunities for hands-on learning with activities like sorting objects by colour, finger painting, or using colourful building blocks. Reading books about colours and singing songs such as "I Can Sing a Rainbow" also reinforces learning in a playful way. Allow children to experiment and explore freely, praising their discoveries to boost their confidence and curiosity. Keep it fun, natural, and engaging!

I hope you find this summary useful to continue discussions around this learning concept with your child.

Thank you for your support

'We understand that all children develop at their own pace, and that we’re all learning from birth. When it’s time to start school, some children will need more help than others.

There are key skills* that schools expect children to be learning before their first day. Practising these will make your child’s journey to Reception as positive as possible.'

There’s lots you can do at home to build your child’s confidence and independence, helping them feel emotionally and practically prepared to start school.

*We are calling this document the ‘Starting Reception’ definition. Some people/organisations refer to this as ‘school readiness’.
