Home Learning Week 13

6.07.20 – 10.7.20

Hello everyone,

Just a few reminders about transition days. Year 2s will be in on Monday 13th July  and Year 3's will be in on Tuesday 14th July. You will spend the day with me (I am SO excited laugh), meet your new teacher and have a fun day including a socially distanced sports day. You will be dropped off and picked up from the hall. Children will need to wear sports clothes with a hat and coat and bring a waterbottle/lunch (school dinners are available).

Mrs Alford will be doing her last phonecalls next week and you will be seeing me on the transition days so if you have any worries or questions then you can talk to either of us or e-mail school.  You can also continue to e-mail in home learning and any questions you may have to deputy@southmoltonprimary.devon.sch.uk.

If the Oak Academy lessons https://www.thenational.academy/online-classroom/schedule and the bbc videos-https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/group/p089nk5f  are enough for you then please continue using these. If you have more time and want some variety then please use the resources below. Remember there is no right way to do home learning- please use what works for you and your child.

Have a great week, keep smiling and I look forward to seeing lots of you next week!!!

Take care,

Miss Shinn x

GET INVOLVED IN THE #DEVON VIRTUAL GAMES: The 4th (Boccia Sock-ia) & 5th Event (Creative Challenge) is now live & well done to Jonathan W for achieving the Gold Award in Event 1!

This is an opportunity for all our children (Reception up to Year 6) to participate in the Devon Virtual Games. There is going to be 6 active events in all, but you enter them individually with support from your family and so can choose which ones you want/can do.

With each event there are certificates, medals and awards and the school with the highest percentage of pupils taking part will also win a prize - so get your friends involved!

The first event was called 'Walk, Jog, Run Devon' but this event has now closed for entries.

We would like to congratulate Jonathan W in Year 2 for achieving the Gold Award by walking, jogging or running 40 miles - a big well done and you will be receiving your certificate in the post along with being entered into the prize draw to win a £25 Amazon voucher.

The second event was called 'Pentathlon' and children have until Sunday 21st June 2020 to complete 5 athletics events which you can do at home and they are; Shuttle Run, Standing Long Jump, Vertical Jump, Speed Bounce and Target Throw.

The third event was called 'Dance' and children have until Sunday 28th June 2020 to create your own dance routine to the song ‘Blinding Lights’ by The Weekend. Your routine will have to be no longer than 1 minute in duration, but you can use any style of dance you like. If there are adequate entries and permissions allow, all the clips will be edited to create a dance video routine to thank all key workers for their hard work.

The fourth (Boccia Sock-ia) and fifth (Creative Challenge) events are now live and children have until Sunday 5th July 2020 to enter. Sock-ia is the same as boccia however you use socks instead of boccia balls. This game can be played individually or with other family members in your household. The 5th challenge is about creating a 7th Spirit of the Games Value for Devon and explain its meaning. You then create your logo & send a photo of what it will look like.

To access all the details go to: https://www.activedevon.org/find-the-devonvirtualgames and click on Event 4 or 5.

Message from Miss Tuach- Good luck everybody and I would love to hear from those that are taking on the challenges and if you have any photos of you participating in Boccia-Sockia or your Creative value then send them to the usual e-mail: deputy@southmoltonprimary.devon.sch.uk for us to share on the 'Home Learning Heroes' page.

Reminder to parents/carers: Try to ensure you are following the latest government guidance on being active during the coronavirus outbreak.

Wimbledon  Tennis fortnight always takes place in the summer term .why not try some of these fun tennis challenges at home .🎾 May be you could challenge your family to see who can complete the most challenges .

School closure- Week 4

Hello everyone J

It was lovely to speak to you all again this week.  I hope you have had a fantastic weekend and have been enjoying the sunshine. Please remember it is really important to continue completing home learning- little and often!

This week I have recorded myself reading the story ‘Grendel: a cautionary tale about chocolate’ to give you some inspiration for literacy and topic (these activities will probably take you a couple of weeks to complete!)

Literacy

  • ’10 minute challenges’- This is a fantastic website full of a range of different writing activities and challenges set by bestselling authors and illustrators! https://authorfy.com/10minutechallenges/
  • Perhaps you could watch a newsround video and write a newspaper report based upon the news in one of the videos? https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround
  • Look at the bottom of this week’s home learning to watch me read the story 'Grendel: a cautionary tale about chocolate' . I have read the story to you and have suggested some fun activities that you could complete at home (for more support for writing a story based on Grendel, watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eq7ZnEHJCqE) If you plan to write a story based on Grendel, I would recommend spending a day creating your character (draw your character and write a character description), a day planning your setting for your story- perhaps you could write a setting description) and a day planning your story (1. Introduce your character, 2. What is the problem? , 3. How does your problem get worse and worse?, 4.What disaster happens?, 5. Include a twist, 6. How will you overcome the problem?) before writing and illustrating your very own stories.

Reading

It is so important to keep reading regularly at home! If you do not have access to lots of books at home, here are some links to a range of different e-books:

Go to ‘teacher’ à Username: parents@harpercollins.co.uk  Password: Parents20!

This website has a massive library of books… from recipe books, literacy and maths books and animal books to stories, hobbies, sports, and ‘weird and wonderful’ J

Audio books:

Maths

Please continue completing activities on (https://login.mathletics.com/) and/or (https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/
Some of you have been working on the fractions unit on ‘White rose maths’ and have been finding parts of the unit challenging. Below are some practical fractions activities you could complete at home with your family/siblings:

      Topic

Based on ‘Grendel a cautionary tale about chocolate’ (look below at my video J):

  • Design Technology:
Food technology: Do you have any chocolate left over from Easter? Perhaps you could explore and experiment with creating and shaping worlds and parts of worlds from chocolate. You could explore the different types of chocolate that are produced and their colours and textures. Look at other sculptures that have been made by confectioners that reflect the settings in Grendel, such as: https://thechocolatesculpture.com/ , http://www.loganmania.com/chocolate-sculpture-artist.html, https://www.gerhardpetzl.com/chocolate-sculptures, https://www.ediblebyaggy.co.uk/gallery/
Think about the colours, shapes, patterns and textures that have been created or that you could create in your own sculptures. You could use these as inspiration for drawing the setting in the story.  If you wanted to go even further, you could start by molding sculptures, leaving a secret message/note inside. http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/videos/techniques/how-make-easter-egg. (This clip discusses tempering which can connect to science work on temperature and changing states). You could then consider how to add detail to their egg without melting or cracking the shell.
  •  Art and Design:
David Lucas is heavily influenced by the pattern in Folk Art and the Arts and Crafts movements. You may like to research Folk Art – What is it? Perhaps you could you make your own? https://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-britain/exhibition/british-folk-art
Could you make your own illustrations based on a character following David Lucas’s tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COnzQZxALNA ?
  • ICT:
Could you log onto purple mash and design your own game based on Grendel? Could you create your own character? Go on ‘tools’à ‘2code’ and explore the coding programme to make your own game!
