Our Governors

Andrew Quayle - Co-opted

Chair of the Full Governing Body

Finance and Resources committee

I have recently retired from full-time employment and relocated to North Devon, having spent the last 20 years working outside the UK, living in 5 different countries on 3 continents. I am a Chartered Accountant and have many years of experience in senior financial roles in multi-national companies. Although my exposure to the education sector is that of a parent, I think my overall business skills and experience can support the school in its future development, especially in terms of financial management but also as part of an effective and supportive governing body.

Kate Kilburn – Vice-Chair and Co-opted Governor

Finance and Resources Focus, Personnel

Current term of office: 08/07/15 - 07/07/19

Kate was co-opted onto the governing body

I joined the governors in February 2014.  I grew up and went to school here in South Molton, I have lived here for the majority of my life. I have two children, one at the Junior School and one here at SMCPS. I work 4 days a week for a Barnstaple-based events company and my job involves dealing with many challenges on a daily basis. I feel that I have a lot to offer the school as a governor, and, like all parents, I would like to see the school that their children attends to be the best.

Tom Parkin – Headteacher

Current term of office: 10/06/13 - ongoing

In his position as Headteacher, Tom is an ex-officio governor

I have been a governor and Headteacher at SMCPS since April 2013. I feel very positive about the future for this school and working with community to ensure all children receive the best education. We have wonderful facilities and environments and I would like to ensure they are used to their full potential.

I am now retired after a 40 year career in education. Most recently I was employed by Dorset LA as a Primary Advisor. Since moving to Devon, I am very keen to use my experience and passion for primary education as a governor at South Molton Community Primary School. I am also on the board of trustees at TEAM Academy Trust for Umberleigh, Pilton and Brayford.

Penny King – Co-opted Governor

Curriculum and EYFS Focus, including Chair of the Teaching and Learning Committee

Current term of office: 08/07/15 - 07/07/19

Penny was co-opted onto the governing body

I have been the Deputy Headteacher at South Molton Community Primary School for a year and a half and I am the class teacher in Yellow Class. I have recently become a Governor and it has been great to be part of such an enthusiastic and passionate Governing body. I look forward to working together with staff, parents and governors, continuing to develop our school as a fantastic place to learn and achieve.

Mary Ellen Whalley – Co-opted Governor

Teaching and Learning committee. Community and Parent Links

Current term of office: 08/07/15 - 07/07/19

Mary Ellen was co-opted onto the governing body

I have two boys aged 3 and 5. My oldest is in Year 1 and has really enjoyed his time at South Molton Community Primary School, especially forest school. I have been really impressed with the range of opportunities that have been open to him since he has joined the school and as a Governor I am keen to ensure that these continue to grow. I teach A level Geography at Petroc and therefore have experience in education, although for the opposite end of the age spectrum. I value education highly and wish that all pupils have access to an excellent start to enable them to achieve their future goals, whatever they may be.

Ruth Carter - Parent Governor

Finance and Resources Focus. Community and Parent Links

Current term of office: 12/09/16 - 11/09/20

Ruth was elected unopposed by the parent body

After graduating from The University of Exeter with a BSc (hons) degree in Biological Sciences, I worked briefly as a Microbiologist before becoming a Project Manager within the NHS.  13 years later, I still work in the NHS as a Business and Governance Manager and I have also recently launched my own holistic aromatherapy and reflexology massage business in South Molton called Aroma Relax. I live with my husband and two young children in South Molton, enjoying long dog walks, taekwondo training and occasionally the odd run when I have time! My greatest joy in life is observing my children being healthy and happy in their development  and flourishing from education and life experiences both at school and at home. In her role as a school governor I intend to provide positive support to the school, the staff, the children and families.
